For those of you who were unable to be there in person, you can hear me read an excerpt from my short story “Odalisque” (from my anthology Foreign Affairs: Erotic Travel Tales), which took place at Shakespeare & Company Booksellers in Vienna, Austria on 17 July 2009. This had to be the hottest night of the year, but thanks to Teddy, copious glasses of mineral water, and a bit of unexpected inspiration from the synagogue next door (now that’s MY secret!), I managed to survive without melting away completely!

Mitzi,
I enjoyed the reading from the story very much! I love having someone read to me. I recall a sensational woman from my childhood named, Tops, she was a regional superintendent of schools. She was a product of the 1920’s! She had three colors of red hair, special pumps that my mother had a “name” for, I cannot recall, and she walked with a wonderful walking stick. I do not think she even needed its assistance. She was all style, and “hello, shugah!”, “how are you honey, darlin’, sweetie!” In a word, she was unforgetable. Thanks for triggering the memory and transporting me from the Texas panhandle to Dubai.
thank you so much, that is such a lovely comment! i am not sure i can compete with your friend “tops” (my hair is mostly one colour!) but i do try my best! 😉
Mitzi,
I really enjoyed your reading as well. Your voice is clear, strong and distinctive. You captivated my attention with the imagery in the way that you described how the people looked in your introduction statement. Dubai, the ideas of it’s customs and traditions being different from the Western World is interesting and informative, including the observance of Ramadan. I like your perspective. There is poetry in the prose of the language in this excerpt from your short story, Odalisque. I can hear that you have a style and unique voice of your own through writing. All of that talk of food and drink makes me hungry. Thanks.
thank you so much for the thoughtful comments!
